A two-storey family home with a contemporary feel using oak and some stainless steel bracing. This is certainly an eccentric looking house! The client's rather challenging remit was to build an oak frame rowing boat to be placed upside down to form part of the entrance hall. Quite an extreme solution to reflect their love of the sea!
The boat frame required compound (250x150mm) gunwhales, two of them on one side due to an irregular roof junction! The rib frames were not set plumb although the glass to the gable was; this did add complications for the glaziers. The boat was lofted to scale on four sheets of plywood and double checked against information from the computers before anything was cut. Three way stainless steel tie rods restrained the gunwhles and ridge and two 8mm cables restrained the whole structure from sliding off the roof.
