Description Reverse splayed scarf with radial under squited ends, including folding wedges with smaller key wedges, pegs and fun timber nuts and threaded pegs. The joint was designed for entry into the "free style" scarf busting competition at FRAME08 held at Cressing Temple Barns in Essex. It performed well achieving a peak load of 3.2 tonnes in bending. Failure was due to the presence of a rather large knot.( that was just the timber that I had) The joint was all made by hand (plus power tools) The radial ends on the undersquits were designed to spread the stress points at the scarf ends, and reduce the risk if splitting along the grain. The reversed splay was designed to increase the friction in the joint, inorder to reduce the risk of the joint seperating along it's axis. It also served to increase the depth of the undersquits, therefore making the ends of the scarfs stronger. The comedy nuts and threaded pegs probably made no difference to the overall strength of the joints as they wern't continuous through the oak. - Discussion
