Description & details This is one of the ‘great barns’ of the Severn vale and believed to date to the 1530’s (documentation evidence not yet dendro dated to my knowledge).rnAs you can it is as sling braced truss making it unusual on two fronts, historically and that the other big barns in the Severn vale are mainly crucks.rnIt is a high status building span is about 30’ and sits on 8’ high dressed stone walls. The timbers are champherd and a lot of the joints are housed .the stub ties have secret wedged dovetails and it looks like they couldn’t get enough spandrels in there (spandrels typical feature of other Severn barns). It is close studded with laths between which are plastered and the roof was probable Cotswold slate and you can still see the torching from inside the roof now has the ubiquitous tin as covering which is saving it well. Although in some state of disrepair it seems to be stable with the odd bit missing and door post sawn off ect… Its has been repaired to stop spread first with wooden ties then some metal work. This a magnificent barn built by highly skilled craftsmen with a big budget.
